Teacher Candidate Class

Starting this spring, the Boston Branch will be running a Candidate class that will continue until the exam in April of 2011. Candidates will need The Manual of Scottish Country Dancing (2005 edition), which can be purchased from the Boston Branch Bookstore for $35.00. The cost for the course is around $150.00, and RSCDS membership is a requirement.

Below is a basic outline for the process.

Requirements for obtaining a Teaching Certificate Level 1 (formerly Preliminary Certificate):

  • Unit 1: Candidates must pass a written test on SCD history, technique, formations, and music. The next available date to take this test is October 9, 2010.

  • Unit 2: Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in practical dancing, as well the ability to dance and brief a set of 12 dances. Test to be given in April 2011.

Requirements for obtaining a Teaching Certificate Level 2 (formerly Full Certificate):

  • Candidates must have a Preliminary Certificate obtained in the last 10 years or a Level 1 Certificate.

  • Unit 4: A candidate must submit to headquarters a record of 6 hours of lesson/teaching plans no less than six months before the examinations (submitted by June 2010) and must be mentored by a Level 2 teacher.

  • Unit 5: Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach an RSCDS dance from start to finish. This includes, but is not limited to, steps, formations, transitions, lesson planning, class management, and the use of music. Test to be given in April 2011.
