Pinewoods JubileeTartan

If you attended the Scottish sessions at Pinewoods Camp in 2005, you would likely have seen a tartan designed for Pinewoods. A short bolt of 11 oz. lightweight tartan fabric was delivered to camp during Scottish Session I and was available for inspection until the end of Scottish Session II.

The tartan was designed by Joel LaMarre, of the Salem Class, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Scots' dancing at Pinewoods: 1953 to 2003. The governing body of the Pinewoods Camp Incorporated very graciously permitted the use of their corporate name as part of the title for the design. The 'Pinewoods Jubilee Tartan' is now officially registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority in Scotland.

This registration process renders a plaid design into a tartan because the design is seen to represent an entity, Pinewoods Camp, and an event, 50+ years of Scottish dancing. Pinewoods Camp now has an indelibly Scottish stamp on it; it has a tartan of its own: the Pinewoods Jubilee Tartan!

While it is hardly necessary to assign a meaning to the seven colors of the design, it is nice to make such associations when they involve a locale that is held dear. Here are the colors described:

  • White: for the clouds overhead and for the Saltire cross of St. Andrew, Patron Saint of Scotland.
  • Blue: for the waters of Long Pond and Round Pond, and for the blue of the Scottish flag.
  • Azure: for the sky overhead on a perfect summer day at camp
  • Black: for the ghillies on the dancers's feet and for the wood of the Highland Bagpipe that urges our steps in the dance, and wakes us each morning
  • Purple: for the thistle, an icon of Scotland.
  • Green: for the pine canopy overhead.
  • Yellow: for the three golden stripes that represent the Jubilee years 1953-2003

It is possible to get a kilt or skirt in the new tartan. Dalgliesh & Son weavers can fill orders for fabric in the 11 oz. weight and the kilting 15 oz. weight. Evelyn Murray's store, Atholl Brose will take your order and measure you for the garment of your choice. A kilt made in the 15 oz. weight will cost $500. A 5% surcharge is being added (this amounts to $28) which goes directly to Pinewoods Camp as part of their capital campaign. A skirt is usually made in the lighter weight wool and costs a little less. Garter Flashes and sashes are currently available at Atholl Brose. These items are being produced by Lochcarron in Scotland. For further price information, please contact Atholl Brose at 617-661-5899 or at athollbrose@verizon.net

As the demand for the Pinewoods Jubilee Tartan increases. Lochcarron Co., a large weaver in the Scottish Borders, and will produce bolts of their 'Reiver' 11 oz. and 'Briariach' 13 oz. fabric. Anyone who sees the tartan and likes it is welcome to place orders for kilts, skirts, ties, sashes and vests. The camp will be contracting for ready-made items in the new tartan that it can sell on its own.

We hope that you will want to own a bit of the Pinewoods Jubilee Tartan as a necktie or scarf, or a lot of it as a kilt or skirt. Pinewoods Jubilee Tartan is a colorful affirmation of Scottish dancers's support of Pinewoods Camp.

Many thanks to Joel LaMarre for designing the tartan and bringing the concept to fruition.

Wee disclaimer:

The image of the Pinewoods tartan is produced from a scan of the actual fabric. Since computer monitors differ widely in their reproduction of color, this image is intended to give an idea of what the tartan is like. Before making a final decision, please go to Atholl Brose in Porter Square, Cambridge, or contact Joel LaMarre to see a swatch of the fabric.
